DT-Lynn Lewis - The Gift That Keeps Giving

Updated: May 8, 2022

What a wonderful Bundle Jamie Rodgers has come up with this month, I wonder how many cards we can all make from this pack :))

As Jamie has started the month with his video Card Making Kit Tutorial on YouTube and shown us projects with the total bundle, I thought I would put my construction head on and make a gift/lantern box with a matching card .

To start off, I cut out the Dotty scallops celebration dies in black card 4 times and once in the front of a black 7x7 card blank, then I mixed some Cosmic Shimmer Clear Varnish Lacquer with Pixie Sparkles Heavenly Hues and Fuchsia Rose on a tile and with this painted the 4 panels I cut out plus the one in the card blank .

You can see an example of what this looks like in the pictures on black or white card .

When dry, I trimmed round the 4 panels leaving a small border around them.

Next, I embossed some white vellum with the embossing folder ‘Radiant Rings’ .

Jamie has mentioned this folder will be coming in a future bundle so any other folder you want to use will be fine .

Then, cut 6 pieces to fit the panels and the card and then stick these to the backs and save one for the lid.

Corners were made next, so I cut black strips of card measuring 12.5 x1.2cm or 4 7/8”x1/2” then scored them down the middle and creased with a bone folder(double check the height because not everyone cuts the panels the same size)

Next, I glued all the panels into the corner strips to get a box shape making sure all panels are the right way up and level before sticking .

To make the base I cut a piece of black card 14.2cm sq or 5 5/8” sq and scored all round at 1/4” or 0.6cm(see the picture to cut the corner tabs) then crease and glue the tabs in. When dry, gently slide into the box down to the bottom, then lift the base sides carefully on the outside and place some glue in to secure the base .

Now cut some more corner pieces to edge the top of the box, securing with mini pegs until dry(see picture) this strengthens the side edges.

Next, I cut the die set ‘Ariel’ into the centre of an A4 black card(see pictures) and then cut a 15cm sq or 6” sq around it and scored at 1cm or 3/8” all round, then cut and stick as base this should fit ok but check your measurement before cutting, then with the embossed vellum piece left stick that on the underside of the lid .

The box is basically finished now so it can be decorated as you want .

I used the ’Ariel’ die as a centre piece in white layered with silver mirror card backing it, plus Sue Wilson’s Button flower dies in silver and white and a Noble Double Stitched Square die to make the white frame on the card front and another on the card inside to cover the sides of the velum .

Finish with a sentiment from the new ‘Wordies’ I used the Birthday set .

Add some nice gems in the flowers and white lace around the lid and card .

Once you have mastered the box you can make this in any colour/event or season you wish .

Place a battery tea-light in the box when you give as a gift to light it up like a lantern .

Enjoy :)
